Matthew W. Woodruff joined the law firm of Rich & Intellisano, LLP as Of Counsel in January 2009. Mr. Woodruff has over 20 years of experience in international and domestic arbitration and litigation as chief trial counsel in numerous securities arbitrations on behalf of individual and corporate investors. Representative matters have included claims arising out of transactions in equities, options, commodities, fixed-income and foreign exchange, as well as issues arising with respect to employment and broker-dealer regulation and compliance.
In commercial arbitration, Mr. Woodruff has been engaged in the resolution of disputes involving petroleum trading, real estate and transactions governed by the Convention on International Sale of Goods. He has initiated and conducted commercial arbitration proceedings before tribunals in London and the former Soviet Union and has conducted numerous evidentiary and discovery hearings in foreign jurisdictions. Mr. Woodruff has significant experience with the discovery of documents subject to foreign law and with the coordination of domestic civil proceedings with domestic and foreign criminal investigations.
Mr. Woodruff has represented individuals and corporations in the prosecution and defense of claims involving securities and commodities fraud, trade finance, and cross-border insolvencies including bench and jury trials in federal and state court. In state court litigation, Mr. Woodruff has been engaged in a wide variety of commercial disputes. He has appeared numerous times before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the New York Appellate Division and in motion practice before the New York Court of Appeals and in certiorari practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Woodruff is an honors graduate of the University of Chicago and received his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School. He is a member of the New York City Bar Association, New York County Lawyers Association and Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association and has published articles on a range of current legal issues. He began practicing law at Lord, Day & Lord, Barrett Smith, where wrote and argued pro bono appeals as a Special Assistant District Attorney. He resides in Manhattan with his wife and children.
